Nobu Downtown Restaurant, New York

David Rockwell’s collaboration with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa began with one small restaurant in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighbourhood. It was there the duo conceived a design conceptinspired by Chef Nobu’s innovative cooking and the culture of the Japanese countryside,where the chef was born and raised. Twenty-three years later, Nobu Tribeca has been closed to make way for a new flagship - Nobu Downtown – set in a landmark building in the Financial District. 

        因为生息在岛国，日本没有车行数日仍然是广袤原野的风光，但却处处是温暖人心、可相互触摸的风景，由此养成了他们纤细的感觉以及愿意亲近自然的情感。无论是川端康成的纯真还是隈研吾的淡雅，从中都能窥探到这种纯粹的意识：用人生世象去表达人间世情。

        23年前，日本著名大厨Nobu Matsuhisa在曼哈顿特里贝克社区开设了一家小型日式餐厅Nobu Tribeca，餐厅设计概念大多来自Nobu创新性的厨艺和深入骨髓的家乡文化。而今，伴随着Nobu Tribeca的终结，坐标金融街的Nobu Downtown应运而生，从而开启了这一品牌的升级迭变。

For this reinvention of Nobu, David Rockwell, has engaged with a number of makers/craftspeople: John Houshmand, a Catskills, New York-based furniture maker and designer, Pascale Girardin, a Montreal-based ceramic artist and the Philadelphia based textile designer Isabella Amstrup. 

        纽约设计事务所Rockwell Group创始人David Rockwell主持了这次再造设计，他在项目伊始与许多艺术家、手工艺者进行交涉，比如蒙特利尔艺术家Pascale Girardin、费城的纺织品设计师Isabella Amstrup等。

David Rockwell and Nobu Matsuhisa’s vision for the space is a continuation of their storyof Japanese craft that began more than two decades ago. This exploration of materialityis a reflection Chef Nobu’s inventive, non-traditional cuisine: the quality and translucency of the fish, the composition of color and texture in each dish, and the blending of Japanese and Peruvian cuisines.

        David Rockwell和Nobu Matsuhisa对餐厅设计的构想是将其作为20多年前的一种延续，而空间的材质则重在反射Nobu的创意十足和不传统的日式：关于过去，更指向未来。

A centrally located circular bar volume features a backlit onyx bar, die-cast and resin-cast candle holders along the back bar that cast a subtle, luminous glow in the space. 

        居中处理的圆形主吧台以缟玛瑙石材为主围绕一周，并追加了柔和的灯光，在照亮主台面的同时，亦营造一种‘月上柳梢头，人约黄昏后’的浪漫。

A sushi bar occupies one section of the bar, while four of the building’s original marbleDoric columns nestle semi-private pockets around the bar. 

        寿司吧台占据了主吧台的一部分，四个多利斯式的大理石柱子围绕四周，庄严但却素雅淡泊。仿佛有意影射日本的建筑特点，以简单朴素为主、强调独特的非对称性，并着眼于形态再现自然。

        著名的一休禅师有一首道歌：“若问心灵为何物，恰如墨画松涛声”。在日本，书道艺术，在于有粗有细、收放自如，婉转曲达不乏流动的布局，那是一种不分时空都会令人沉沦的美。

For the bar and lounge area, Rockwell conceived a design influenced by the Japanese art of calligraphy. Window screens comprised of white rope dip-dyed in black, inspired by Japanese sumi-e ink and persimmon ink, referencing Nobu’s Peruvian influences,dramatically evokes the bristles of a calligraphy brush and anchors the room.

        受日本书法艺术的启发，David Rockwell设计了一个悬挂在吧台上方的艺术装置，灵感来源于日本单色墨画艺术和persimmo墨画。另外，在秘鲁风格的介入下，也让这种书法画笔更加的刚柔并进，和室内空间形成呼应。

A river rock wall at the base of the stair is a nod to Nobu’s original Tribeca location. Composed of LED tiles forming an 8’ long digital pond, the feature will display images designed by the LAB at Rockwell Group. 

        如果说楼梯间的河石墙面是对餐厅所在地特里贝克社区的致敬，那么楼梯下面由LED屏组成了一个8英尺长的数字化“池塘”，则是Rockwell Group刻意为之的手法。

        以此流动的姿态为空间注入一种灵活与自然，有助于人们在快节奏的生活中静下心来，去思考、去体悟。

Hand-cast glazed tiles by Girardin in subtle shades of blue form a feature wall in the 35- seat private dining room, which can open up to the main dining area. 

        不仅如此，他还和纽约手工雕刻艺术家John Houshmand完成的一件精致的梣木雕塑置于餐厅角落，和悬于半空的水墨画旋转状艺术装置相得益彰，也让人们看到了艺术之于空间的力量。

The dining area is organised into a series of experiences connected by an undulating wooden canopy inspired by kirigami, a type of origami involving the folding and cutting of paper. Abstracted ash trees, inspired by Nobu’s original location, seem to support the canopy. 

        地下一层为主体用餐区，这里的就餐体验通过一组“起伏不定”的木质顶棚来实现，灵感来自于日本的剪纸艺术，即纸张的折叠和裁剪，而空间中那些抽象化了的梣木“树干”似乎也起到了支撑顶棚的作用。

Occupying the ground floor and cellar level of the historic building, Nobu’s design connects old and new. The ground floor features a bar, lounge, and informal dining area. An interior landmark, the 4,500 SF space is framed by heroic Botticino marble columns, a 30’ high ceiling, and polished limestone flooring. 

        “Nobu Downtown餐厅贯穿这个拥有悠久历史建筑的地面层和酒窖层，新旧的融合让空间充满现代味道的时候，同时显得十分的稳健”，David Rockwell说。

        面对空间后方的寿司吧台位于主用餐区的侧边，而半私密的就餐区位于楼梯的下方。印有日式图腾的长毛绒长条软座搭配秘鲁经典的色彩，让用餐更具特色。

The 13-seat sushi bar is made of ash and blackened steel. The upholstery of the custom bar stools continue the idea of a kimono draped over the back of the chair. Off to the side, two shelving units form the walls of an intimate sake room. The shelves are filled with handmade ceramic sake carafes by Girardin. 

        13人座的寿司吧台由梣木和黑钢组成，而定制的吧台座椅的装饰则延续了和服悬挂在椅子背部的概念，不与世争、不与世浊、悠然自得。

        在《艺术的故事》里说：艺术品的每一个特点都出自艺术家的某一决定，它们是为特定场合和特定目的而创作的，在着手之前那些故事就已经在考虑之中了。这是贡布里希博士想要阐述的艺术的价值，不仅是为了欣赏，还有那些深藏其中的情感、故事和智慧。

        细长弯曲的长条软座背对一面留白的灰泥墙面，上方是一个由加拿大艺术家Pascale Girardin创作的陶瓷突出艺术品。Girardin手工上釉的瓦片泛出细微的蓝色光影，在这个拥有35人座的私密用餐区形成了一个特色墙面。

        两个货架单元组成了一个亲密的日式清酒半私密区间，货架上放满了由Girardin手工制作的陶瓷清酒瓶。酒瓶上的画大都演绎日本文化与自然，或许在日本人眼里没有对自然的感动，也就不会有对人及空间的感动。

        温润的岛国环境，培育了日本人亲近自然、爱恋人生的温柔细腻的情感。而设计师将这一切巧妙的溶于纽约这一时尚之都，重新洗练了自然、时尚、空间及人关系。
