Designed by Studio Paolo Ferrari, Toronto’s newly-opened Daphne is a contemporary and eclectic reimagining of the quintessential American bistro. Sprawling and set across a series of distinctive rooms, Daphne simultaneously embodies the unexpected while bringing in the warmth and nostalgia of New England prep. At once intimate and grand, eccentric and sculptural, convivial and experimental, the deeply imaginative space from Ferrari is reminiscent of a great residence that’s evolved over time — envisioned to create an immersive experience of wonder and subtle awe.

“We wanted to tap into the spirit of the American bistro, yet create something entirely reimagined,” explains Ferrari. “In designing Daphne, we moved away from the typical wood paneling and a heavy, dark atmosphere, and instead intentionally designed the space to evoke softness and levity.” This ethos underlines Daphne, as a space that seemingly effortlessly fuses both a subtle monumentality and a convivial warmth.

Guests are greeted by an intimate arrival space, where a transparent full-height wine cabinet allows a glimpse at the dining rooms that beckon beyond, instilling intrigue at what’s to come. Through a draped passage, guests step into the voluminous and vaulted Great Room — an immediate exemplification of the ever-present sophisticated grandeur that permeates Daphne. The grand space is also reminiscent to the warmly luxurious spirit of a Nancy Meyers film, with custom furnishings that are deeply residential in feel and varsity-inspired checkerboard tiling. The Great Room is anchored by an energetic and vibrant open kitchen, immediately setting an atmosphere of excitement and energy. Innovative and surprising, the entirety of the kitchen is on display — from the finishing touches on plates to the prep kitchen — evoking both the abundant spirit of hospitality and the sense of being hosted in an elevated and welcoming home.

Moving into the Drawing Room, the enveloping, colour-blocked space is softened and lightened by playful design touches and greenery. Slight nostalgic nautical references feature throughout out — from the polished metal detailing on the oak table tops to the Louver details on the window coverings, a nod to a Cape Cod Americana aesthetic. Wine bottles stacked gracefully on the walls add a library-like feel, continuing to imbue the room with a sense of familiarity and warmth. Further design details await discovery here, from commissioned pencil drawings on the red ochre-hued walls that appear as photographs from a distance, to a botanical-inspired hanging pendant, reminiscent of forms in early Karl Blossfeldt photography.

Rather than simply being a section of one of the dining room spaces, instead the bar is separated — connected to the dining areas through a long, mirrored corridor. This separation adds further moments of intrigue and wonder, and continues to push forward Daphne’s sense of innovation and experimentation. The entire corridor is thoughtfully-designed itself, with a wrap-around hand-painted landscape mural that gives the feel of exploring a lush garden. This verdant mural continues into the deeply artistic bar and onto its gently undulating walls, bringing in the quality of a lush conservatory. The curves in the wall create small alcoves, allowing for further elements of intimacy and exploration. Contrasting the whimsical, botanical feel is the sculptural grandeur of Daphne, which remains ever-present in the bar through elements such as the fluting on the exterior of the bar itself — a nod to Beaux-Arts architect Henry Bacon — and the monumental, reflective steel back wall.

Stepping into the bar is almost akin to stepping into an exquisitely-designed film set. Guests eyes are immediately drawn to the back-lit, glass-topped bar — an artful focal point of the space, inspired by filmmaker Stanley Kubrick. The deeply atmospheric bar top is a play on the legendary scene at Kubrick’s fictional Overlook Hotel, when Jack Nicholson’s character has his face lit up by in-bar lighting below. At Daphne, the effect adds to the immersive and cinematic nature of the bar.

Wide and expansive, the Garden Terrace is a generous extension of the indoor space. Here, a dilapidated building was torn down to open up the generously-sized alley, with the vision of creating a lush oasis within the city. The terrace is abundant with potted plants and greenery, and acts as a further continuation of the botanical theme indoors. Abundant soft seating — upholstered in ochre yellow and stripes — encourages lingering, while striking artistic elements offer an eccentric sensibility. The host station in the Garden Terrace is lightly inspired by the work of French sculptor Claude Lalanne, a swan-esque sculptural greeting for the outdoor area. A green marble bar in the Garden Terrace serves as an additional gathering space.

Daphne is a world unto itself, awaiting discovery. The entirety of the furniture and lighting is custom designed by Studio Paolo Ferrari, further establishing it as a space truly without parallel. A renewing departure from the expected restaurant layout, separate spaces allow for genuine wonder and surprise as guests explore the space.

Ferrari’s interiors often reference deeper inspiration from art, architecture, and cinema, and Daphne proves no exception. At the heart of the project is a cinematic duality of an immersive, Kubrick-inspired experimentation, contrasted with the softness and conviviality of the beloved aesthetic of a Nancy Meyers film. Unexpectedly playful and thoroughly redefining, Ferrari’s take on the timeless sophistication of the American bistro inspires guests to experience at once the joy of discovery and the effortless comfort of home.
