Humans have identified and utilised minerals since the earliest civilisations. Some minerals have been transformed into precious gemstones, such as diamonds, sapphires, and emeralds, which have been treasured throughout history. Yet many other minerals quietly exist within our everyday surroundings, often unnoticed. Quartz provides silica for glass production; calcite, the main mineral in limestone, is used in cement; while feldspar, halite, graphite, and many other minerals support modern life. Although minerals are present everywhere around us, their existence and contribution often remain unnoticed.

Founded by a team of young mineral collectors, Yeyeland aims to share their appreciation of minerals with a wider audience. They create desserts that mimic the appearance of various minerals, transforming geological forms into edible experiences. The project introduces an innovative spatial concept that combines mineral displays with dessert culture, creating a unique environment where science, nature, and gastronomy intersect.

Located on South Wulumuqi Road in Shanghai, the site sits within a vibrant neighbourhood with a distinctive urban character. Although irregular in shape, the site is directly connected to the street and features three large window openings. STUDIO 4/301 introduced a soft-volume structure onto the existing façade, creating a mineral-like presence within the streetscape. Illuminated by backlit LEDs, the glittering fibreglass surface reflects light like a polished mineral gem. The three openings establish different relationships with the street: one welcomes visitors as the entrance, one presents mineral-inspired installations through a display window, and the third frames a view into the dessert dining area, inviting passers-by to discover the space within.

STUDIO 4/301 was inspired by the process of mineral excavation. Referencing geological excavation sites where excavation areas are often accompanied by a research tent, the studio organised the space into two zones: the mineral retail area and the dessert area. Upon entering the shop, customers are invited to browse the mineral displays, while a suspended tent-like structure above the dessert area creates a space for visitors to enjoy the “found” mineral-inspired cakes discovered from the display.

Within the retail area, a central installation is positioned directly opposite the entrance as the focal point of the space. STUDIO 4/301 selected various minerals provided by Yeyeland and collaborated with the contractor to create a rock-like display volume that embeds and reveals these geological treasures. The installation glows from floor to ceiling, with surfaces tilted at irregular angles to evoke the natural formations of minerals discovered inside caves. Beyond attracting the attention of passers-by, the installation also showcases the owner’s most treasured mineral collection.

Additionally, STUDIO 4/301 transformed the floor into an archaeological field by embedding selected minerals within resin. During material experiments, the team discovered that certain minerals, such as halite, reacted with the resin and could not maintain their original appearance. The final selection included fluorite, obsidian, crystal specimens, chatoyant stones, and lazurite, each preserved as geological fragments beneath the surface.

In collaboration with the lighting consultant and contractor, STUDIO 4/301 developed custom fibreglass panels with a warm translucent quality. Tiny air bubbles suspended within the material create subtle imperfections, while backlighting reveals a surface reminiscent of glittering stones formed through natural processes. Wrapped around the display walls, these luminous panels create a mineral-like atmosphere that frames and enhances the collection.

STUDIO 4/301 extended the use of fibreglass into the display fixtures. The quarter-circle display fixtures are supported by 8mm thick stainless steel plates. These modular elements can be scattered throughout the space or connected using selected hexagonal screws, allowing them to circulate around the central display volume and adapt to different exhibition arrangements.

Beneath the suspended tent structure, green stucco is applied throughout the dessert area. The wall surfaces are finished with both rough and polished texture framed by 4mm stainless steel plates that add a refined edge to the handcrafted materiality. A series of wall lamps illuminate selected translucent fluorite stones, held within stainless steel tricyclic structures referencing the geometric formations of crystals.

The side tables continue the mineral-inspired language of the space. STUDIO 4/301 translated crystalline forms into the table supports, creating sculptural bases beneath 20mm thick glass tops. Scattered throughout the dessert area, the tables create a natural sense of growing, as if fragments of minerals are emerging from within the floor.
