This is your very first important project in New York, how do you feel about it? Did you work well with the local team? What do you love it the most?

I have been living in New York part time, over 20 years, having my own lovely New York nest on the Upper East Side all this time.   When I decided to move to New York and to invest time and energy into that great city, it was exactly to get (ideally)this type of trophy project.   My experience in New York private properties renovation and construction prolifically with great New York teams combined with my experience in property development in Florida lead me to be selected to do the Waldorf Astoria.   I am as thankful as I am excited to have the opportunity to work on this project.   I injected a lot of passion and dedicated a huge amount of energy on the Waldorf  Astoria New York and hope the result will open many more New York City doors.

Did you design the interior architecture of the Waldorf Tower? What efforts have you made in the renovation of residence/guest rooms(which are even bigger)and public spaces(esp. the hall)? What connections are made with the restored building?

On the residential side, we had no persevered or protected elements of architecture, I literally had a full blank page. So, my work is to create great functional and dreamy spaces infused with the Waldorf Astoria DNA. I first designed a typical apartment, starting by creating contemporary art deco inspired interior architectural details fully customized with bespoke kitchens, master bathrooms, master closets, powder rooms, and guest baths. All of the customization in my design is meant to adapt and emphasize the quality of every unique unit for sale so that we have a perfect product on the market which is infused with the Waldorf Astoria DNA throughout my design but in the meantime very adaptable to any of the co-owners’ personalization’s.

As mentioned in the official videos, you designed the Waldorf Tower from A to Z.What principles did you establish firstly? For example, where do the arcs, curves and metal elements come from?

My design illustrates nonchalant palatial living. When working on the Waldorf Astoria, I developed, area by area and room by room, an architectural vocabulary to tell a progressing story just like in great private mansions. I added curves when it was linear geometrical building structure. Those curves emphasize the feeling of calmness and feeling of home.

4、 You do value craftsmanship and natural beauty a lot, I suppose it reflected in space and furniture customization. Please take 3-5 furniture as examples to look into the details.

We custom designed 75% of all interior furnishing at the Waldorf Astoria New York so that it tells a continuous, cohesive, story between the architecture and the resident or guest. I selected a large variety of finishes that assure longevity not only from a maintenance perspective but because of their appeal which is perfectly adjusted to each area. I tend to choose finishes according to the functions, so I used bamboo and crackled ceramic on the poolside, rattan and cane in the winter garden, stainless steel in the gym, shawl -like gilded wood in the main living room, Prince of Whales pattern on the walls and floors, and glossy walnut in the library. Being noble, most important of all is the quality finishes manufactured by great craftsmen in the United States, in Europe, just as in Asia.

5、 Waldorf has a long spectacular history, how do you understand those classic Spaces and the significant Events? What do you draw from the original Art Deco style, for example, how do you pay respect to the windows of the building when it was inaugurated in 1931? What do you use to decorate the The Monaco Bar or the President Library?

First, I made sure that all circulations, were systematically towards windows. Then we changed all the windows of the entire building back to their original size ( as over the years all previous window structures were preserved, one on top of the other reducing the glazing size).

In the library just as in the bar, I selected reflective finishes such as high gloss paint with exposed nailheads on the double doors, high polish walnut smoke and mirror frosted and glossy for the bar. All of these reflective finishes were chosen so the natural light, much like the evening skyline, bounces off these surfaces.

Please select 3 of the following public Spaces and introduce the most representative public space design : Starlight Pool/lounge/Terrace, SPA, Empire Club, Winter Garden, Stage&Screen Theater,The Chrysler Room,Grand Salone…and What are those space (like) before the renovation?

There had never been a pool before at the Waldorf Astoria, and I think that’s for two reasons, 1 being that people had issues with nudity back then, and 2 no one knew how to swim. So, we created that great pool out of an empty ballroom. There was an empty volume with nice windows and a skylight which was shot since many years, so I introduced a layout diving the space in 3; one being a fountain sitting area for those who like to be by the pool without being in the pool then I kind of divided further with columns so it would create areas so people could be in the same room within little nooks so that they don’t feel too exposed to the other; then I created the middle section with the 100 ft long pool, again using some alcoves for daybeds to preserve people’s sense of privacy; and at the end I created the winter garden so that it feels like a forever and year-round ray of sunshine, suggesting that very warm and inviting green room with a bar so that guests have a great bucolic, poetic and laidback entertaining area.

The grand salon was a very challenging area, the volume they gave me had four massive pillars right in the center, so I decided to use those pillars as an asset by creating a series of arches which act as visual dividers and reflectors to the source of light installed at the base of each pilaster. Here again, it creates an effect of various nooks so people sharing the same room while having the impression that they each have their own exclusive area.

What spatial planning did you do for the unique views around the hotel?Like the Chrysler Building Room, what elements do you pick that echo to it?Is there any similar space design for the Helmsley Building or the Central Park?

For the Chrysler room, which acts as a festive dinning room, the starting point I was given was a series of demolished areas. Having been multiple rooms previously, the rhythm of the windows had become very uneven, although you wouldn’t know it now looking at the spectacular view of the Chrysler building. I decided to treat the room emphasizing a rhythm of horizontals to disguise the unevenness of the verticals, I used series of various sandwich reflective materials so that at nighttime it would feel like a great fairy tale.
