“The transformation of the historic Touring building fits within the context of the regeneration of the Association, safeguarding both its social function and the testimony of its values. The style and direction with which Radisson and Studio Marco Piva have carried out the project, decidedly innovative when it comes to the world of hotels, fits perfectly with everything that represents the Touring world. In this original undertaking, the Italian Touring Club regenerates its memory in what it hopes will become the new Home of travellers, attributing it the maximum amount of value and consolidating tradition, heritage and generation of resources.”

The recovery of the authentic history that permeates the halls of the building is the result of a massive and important operation of great cultural interest: in order to preserve and give new lustre to the historical and cultural heritage of the Touring Club Italiano (TCI), the architectural and interior design intervention completed by Studio Marco Piva fittingly found inspiration in the travel concept. The selected materials, the finishes, the furnishing elements, every detail recalls those which, in the common imagination, are elements tied to travel and consequently to the founding history of the Touring Club.
The project conceived by Studio Marco Piva aimed to restore the imposing building dating back to 1915 to its original refinement and glory: indeed, the 5-star hotel wants to become a reference point for a high-end tourism in constant dialogue with the city of Milan, being at the service of guests of the hotel, as well as of residents, affirming and helping to disseminate the culture of travel in Italy and around the world. In this historic setting, the guest and the citizen thus find themselves immersed in a unique experience: a cultural journey between past, present and future.
“With my Studio, I have a forward-looking goal: living the present, while preserving the past and planning the future. This is the perspective that has guided the restoration of Palazzo Bertarelli, taking advantage of every aspect of the original building, allowing its elegant and sophisticated soul to travel into the 21st century.”

The regeneration of the existing spaces involved a meticulous cleaning of the façades, to bring them back to their original splendour while maintaining the elements that characterise them: from the marble slabs, to the wrought iron elements created by Alessandro Mazzucotelli, to the imposing gates that mark the main entrances.
The neoclassical-inspired building is characterised by refined ashlar bands on the outside and large, orderly pilasters framing the windows, with columns on the first floor and pilasters on the second. The top floor features mullioned windows with round arches, while the central part is characterised by slender three-light windows and the colonnaded entrance. The carefully conceived lighting project highlights each of these neoclassical elements, marking the rhythms of the façades using elegant lines of light.

The original cladding with the stone engravings of the names of the Club’s founding members can still be seen in the hall, while soft and comfortable elements furnish the large lounge area dedicated to hospitality, where a reception desk welcomes the hotel’s guests.

The spaces of the Bistrot Bertarelli 1894 Milano, which originally housed the historic Touring Club Italiano (TCI) library, have become the coffer of fascinating collections of bibliographies, books, guides and maps taken directly from the Touring Club’s archive. The restaurant is laid out over two levels and is characterised by multi-functional spaces that include a lounge bar, a breakfast room, a bookshop and the travel agency. Moreover, the layout makes it possible to guarantee customers an exceptional level of privacy and conviviality. The predominant use of dark wood embellished with metal inserts, together with grazing lighting, for an overall and enveloping chromatic quality, outline the true essence of this distinctive space: an authentic book boutique. The restaurant presents itself as a place to explore: the goal of a closely integrated culinary and cultural journey.

The standard rooms can be reached through a succession of simple portals with metal details. The linear development of dark wood panelling on both sides of the corridors has been conceived to evoke the entrance of a train carriage which accompanies guests inside the room, in an enveloping and comfortable environment. The rooms feature high ceilings that end in a smoked oak parquet floor in various colours and laid in a herringbone pattern, for a touch of elegance and charm in bold contrast with the interior of the light and lively bathrooms, characterised by white to grey colours.

The exceptional Touring Council Hall – located on the first floor and in the very centre of the building – has been transformed into the exclusive Presidential Suite: a privileged space whose balcony overlooks Corso Italia. The space was the focus of a meticulous restoration that has emphasised its historical value and original beauty, making it one of a kind. The prestigious suite is multifunctional: the sleeping area, which has been divided from the living area, allows it to also be used for small meetings or private events.

The junior suites, on the other hand, are characterised by a large open space and a strategic location with a splendid view of the city. Some of them are also found on the fourth or the loft floor – the last level of rooms – consisting of 13 suites, each completely different from one another and defined by a special wall texture that runs along the entire perimeter of the room.

Precisely in this historical and contemporary tableau, Studio Marco Piva has custom designed most of the furnishings of the new Hotel Palazzo Touring Club which, through the careful selection of materials, finishes and meticulous attention to detail, evoke those elements that in the common imagination are tied to travel and to the founding history of the Italian Touring Club: the symbol of the circle, recurrently present throughout the hotel – as for example in the decorative lighting – recalls the idea of the globe, the Cartesian axes and the bicycle wheel with its dynamic movement (as per the organisation’s logo). The use of leather for all the headboards is a direct reference to the fabric typically used for seats in train carriages, while various material inserts and furnishing details recall the iconography of the suitcase. Finally, the Touring Table: an impressive table located in the library, designed by Marco Piva, with imposing legs and measuring approximately three metres in length, conceived to be a collaborative space, a place for sharing, the perfect setting for the restart of Italy’s hospitality sector.
