Stone Vase 5
Stone Vase 2
Stone Vase 10

CHI WING LO SHAPES OF EXPLORATION
“... How nature grows... albeit not always favorable, plants and flowers creeping out, from a fracture of a rock, a patch of moisture, a little dirt by a curb... in searching for the sun, with which to reveal their equal brilliance and zest. They are lives, like ours, flourishing, to inspire life and to wish us to cherish the unceasing optimism of wanting to thrive and to prevail.
If a vase could be as laconic as to have only these very basic features: just a slit, or an aperture to invite the sun in, a corner to contain a pinch of dampened soil, enough to let buds burst forth, flowers blossom. Without much effort, if a vase could also provide these: a background for the colour of florets to paint on, a canvas for the stems to delineate their twists and contours, a frame to mount the changing postures and evolution of their proliferation and, if also, their evocative decomposition; a square, a circle, pure geometrical shapes like these, to juxtapose in pictorial contrast and synthesis with their exuberant and free-growing spirit...” CWL
Singled out in highly articulated episodes, each of these vases, with their boundless possibilities in interacting with the kingdom plantae, conveys an ideal about our yearning and way of seeing, in which if there exists a beauty more beautiful than nature. Made of Zhaoqing dark ink stone and white stalagmite, they bring about a wide embrace for all the natural hues in between. These vases are like magnifying lenses, leading us to focus on the uniqueness of a common leave, an unclassified colour we may discover from a petal, the tempo of germination we may be able to measure by the gaze we are not usually so engaged.
Developed from the water feature collection of 2015 which has since drawn wide appreciation among collectors, designers and the general public, these vases are continuous exploration of Zhaoqing Duan Yan. Chi Wing Lo’s objects for 1ness are regarded as useful poetry. He unites wisdom and sensibility of past and present, creating objects that are lasting, simple and essential. By reexamining conventional productions with observance and empathy, Lo wishes his designs can help to rejuvenate a craft from falling into oblivion by bringing it closer to the need and spirit of our time. He hopes his rigorous reinterpretations can propel forward more viable alternatives. Like how he sees his architecture and furniture, Lo wants these objects of everyday life to occupy a special place in the inner domain of our habitation, reconnecting us to the healthy essentiality of life and living.
This series of ten stone vases is among the new collection of furniture and objects designed by Chi Wing Lo to be presented in SHAPES OF EXPLORATION, an exhibition of the latest works of DIMENSIONE CHI WING LO Italia and 1ness that extends design with the dimension of discovery, the joy of experimenting and experiencing new possibilities and ideas through rigorous reinterpretation of set conventions.
